As the demand for all-in-one financial solutions grows, there was an opportunity to integrate investment and trading features directly into the app. This project explored the potential to add live trading for stocks, ETFs, and commodities, with future plans to expand into crypto.

The trend in fintech indicates a rising user preference for managing both banking and investment activities in one place. Banks like Revolut have already incorporated trading features, showing strong demand for such integrations. User feedback supported this, with many expressing interest in accessing both their banking and investment services within a single app. This project aimed to offer features like portfolio tracking and daily personalised updates, empowering Wise users to seamlessly manage their finances and investments together.

To understand who our users were and the issues they faced with the existing search, I conducted user testing with American sportsbook users and analysed previously collected CSAT survey feedback. This revealed three key insights:

Users fell into seven personas, with the most common being the Casual Bettor, Recreational Sports Fan, and Professional Gambler.

Multiple entry points into the search flow caused confusion. The original search layout didn’t meet US market expectations (e.g. incorrect odds format, titles, and layout).

Assessing Investment Demand

Assessing Investment Demand

Initial research and user testing confirm the demand for investment and trading options within banking apps. Multiple UK banks, such as Revolut, offer robust investment features, including stocks, ETFs, and crypto, attracting users interested in active trading. I also reviewed forums and articles about other banking apps, gathering insights from direct quotes and website feedback, which emphasised the need for simpler, low-fee investment options.

User interviews revealed that 6 out of 10 participants with investment experience expressed interest in using a banking app like Wise for their investments. A key theme from the feedback was the desire to conduct both banking and investing activities without moving between apps. Other common themes included the demand for simplicity, low fees, and ethical investment options. The feedback strongly suggests that integrating investment features into Wise would meet a significant user demand and position it as a comprehensive financial platform.

Once the core features had been prioritised through stakeholder discussions, I moved into the wireframing phase. I explored multiple layout variations to test how best to incorporate key elements such as filtering, recent searches, and predictive suggestions. These wireframes served as a foundation for validating ideas early on, allowing me to present and refine solutions quickly based on feedback from both stakeholders and the wider product team.

Validating the Wireframes

Validating the Wireframes

To validate early design decisions, I conducted task-based usability testing with five participants representing a range of investing experience levels. Each user was asked to complete key actions such as checking their portfolio, browsing news, and buying stocks. Feedback focused on improving clarity, visual hierarchy, and personalisation. Participants responded positively to features like the podcast and news feed, but suggested clearer terminology and more context-aware insights — such as portfolio-specific tags and more obvious navigation. These insights helped shape the next iteration of wireframes and informed several key usability improvements.

During user testing and interviews, users showed strong interest in a personalised podcast news update for their current positions. The podcast would be sent daily at the same time, and leveraging my expertise in automation and AI prompting, I developed the following workflow:

  1. Ticker Data: The user’s current positions are pulled from a database (In this case Google Sheets).

  2. Stock News Search: A stock news API is queried for the latest updates on each ticker.

  3. News Aggregation: The relevant news is compiled into a cohesive summary.

  4. Script Generation: The aggregated news is passed to OpenAI’s LLM to create an engaging podcast script.

  5. Podcast Creation: The script is sent to ElevenLabs via API to generate the podcast in the selected voice.

  6. Storage & Delivery: The podcast is saved to a database (In this case Google Drive) and passed to the Wise app for user access.

This workflow eliminates the need for developer input, enabling a fully automated and personalised daily podcast for each user. It’s an example of a task I regularly complete in my current role.

The completed design offers a robust solution integrated within the Wise banking app, adhering to its existing UI styling and design patterns, while addressing core user needs. The design offers high personalisation, with features such as 'reorder home page' functionality, a daily personalised news podcast updating users on their current positions, and I created designs in both light and dark mode. This further enhances the user experience by offering additional customisation options.

The design also allows for future expansion into markets like cryptocurrency. By streamlining the user experience with an intuitive interface, the design eliminates the need for users to switch between banking and investment apps. This results in a simplified user journey, reducing friction and allowing users to manage both their finances and investments seamlessly within the same app.
